Your European summer – travel through the flavors of Europe!
Do you know where breaded fish and chips are traditional dishes? Which nation prefers baguettes with herbs and garlic? This answer is too easy if you remember the synonym for baguette. Have you tried Spanish-style tacos or making a healthy version of Wiener Schnitzel? If you don’t have an answer to all questions or you would like to deepen your knowledge, we’re going on a little trip through Europe to introduce you to the Europeans’ favorite delicacies!
Croquettes – Netherlands
As much as we like to add them to Zagreb Schnitzel, croquettes are not a traditional Croatian dish. Croquettes are a popular Dutch snack, and they are usually filled with meat, cheese, or, as we usually eat them, potatoes. Due to the method of preparation and deep frying, we often avoid this fine food because of the extra fat that comes with it.
Pommes Frites - Belgium
Belgian pommes frites, or simply Belgian fries, are a favorite side dish of many generations and nationalities. You’ve probably never heard someone say they don’t like fries. We often eat it as a snack, or as a side dish with burgers, larger pieces of meat or grilled vegetables. It is most often eaten with ketchup, and more and more food connoisseurs add BBQ sauce, tartar, or sweet and sour sauce. However, just like croquettes, fries are a rather unhealthy and tasty deep-fried meal, with added fat and salt.
Wiener Schnitzel - Austria
The classic of all classics, the Viennese schnitzel is like fries, a favorite dish of every celebration, Sunday lunch or banquet. It is most often made from pork, and more and more often from chicken, because attention is paid to the intake of macronutrients and the ratio of fat to meat. However, regardless of the healthier chicken version, the classic method of preparation is frying and baking in a generous layer of bread crumbs. But there must be a healthier solution…
Fish and Chips – UK
The classic of the British Isles is certainly this combination of breaded cod and favorite fries that the British “borrowed” from the Belgians for this dish. Everyone loves international fast food, and in London you will come across shops specializing in “fish and chips” at every turn. As much as we love this fried, salty, and fatty food, we would be happy to try a healthy version.
Churros – Spain
Finally, something sweet! The popular Spanish pastry dessert is often served with chocolate sauce. Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, ideal for combination with hot melted chocolate. In modern versions, chopped nuts, forest fruit sauce, and often ice cream or whipped cream are added. Churros are a perfect example of a dessert that makes us feel like we could sleep like a baby. However, we prefer to keep the delicious taste, with an even better and lighter feeling after eating.
